Professor Joerg Mattes

Professor Joerg Mattes is a Paediatric Respiratory Physician (FRACP) based at John Hunter Children's Hospital, Newcastle, NSW. He provides specialist services as a consultant in paediatric respiratory medicine across the Northern NSW Child Health Network.

Professor Mattes is the Chair and Discipline Lead of Paediatrics & Child Health at the University of Newcastle and a Course Coordinator for the WACH Joint Medical Program Year 4. He is a translational researcher with internationally recognized expertise in both experimental and clinical paediatric respiratory medicine as well as a teacher with the vision to promote self-improving health care to children and their families through excellence in research & education.

Professor Mattes' research is focused on pathogenesis of asthma and respiratory infections and he has established the NSW Infant Lung Function Centre (NICE) to investigate the physiological, cellular and molecular origins of asthma in early life.
